Burton F. Beers of Greenville, N.C., died Jan. 30, 2016. A former
history professor at NC State, Beers was head of NC State’s Department
of History from 1981–85. He was named an Alumni Distinguished
Professor in the early 1970s by the Alumni Association. He was
awarded the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the
university’s highest honor for faculty members, and the Watauga
Medal in the 1990s. He co-authored North Carolina State University:
A Pictorial History with Murray Scott Downs.

Faye Young Miller ’78 of Ithaca, N. Y., died
Sept. 23, 2015. A two-time basketball
letter-winner at NC State, Young Miller
played for Kay Yow and was co-captain
of the third-ranked Wolfpack in 1977–78,
helping lead the team to a 29-5 record.
She and her twin sister, Kaye (who died
in 2010), played together at NC State
and professionally. She was head coach
at Manhattan College for two seasons
and a women’s
basketball color
commentator
for ESPN from
1983–1988.
In 2009, she
published the
book Winning
Basketball
for Girls.
